The Sportsman’s Club Team Has Started The Season!

Our Sportsman’s Club team is very keen to get the season started & the lodge is being towed from winter moorage to Sportsman’s Bay this week.
Once everything is in place, we’ll be ready to welcome our first guests of the season. We expect the fishing to be hot right from the get-go. Even our Yamaha technicians setting up the motors at the lodge pre-season have fun fishing every June.

It’s always exciting when the guests & guides return to the docks in Sportsman’s Bay from fishing. Below, Guides Ryan & Zach each have a story of exciting fishing with hoochies & spoons. There are other methods of fishing for the big salmon – mooching with cut-plug herring at about 80-120′.  This is popular early in the morning minutes from Sportsman’s Bay around Jackson’s Hole & The Wall.  Many Tyees (30 lbs & over) have delivered some exciting moments as the guest maneuvers the boat to more open water to allow the salmon to run with tip up & a tight line (but not too tight).

Non-guided guests may consult with our very knowledgeable dock hosts for gear & bait.
After every meal, discussions are held in the dining room about the most recent fishing activity, bait & catches.

Guide ZACH Says:
Coho and Chinook salmon can be targeted in a variety ways. Most commonly with either hoochies, spoons, or herring.  My personal favourite way to target big chinook salmon is with spoons. Specifically spoons with glow to help entice salmon in lower light conditions.
In July last season, I was fishing with guests in front of “The Wall” just around the corner from Sportsman’s Bay.
The first pass at The Wall one of my guests landed a 20lb Chinook.
Just an hour later, guest Doug landed a beautiful 32 lb Tyee Chinook.
After going back to the dock to weigh Doug’s catch, my guests & I headed back out for the last hour of the morning.
Again, on the first pass back at The Wall, guest Mickey hooked into a 52 lb Chinook!
What a thrilling morning at the Sportsman’s Club.

Guide RYAN Says:
One of the most popular way to catch big salmon on the Central Coast of  British Columbia at Rivers Inlet is the glow white hoochie which imitates a live squid – it has GLOW EYES.  I was fishing close to the rocks early one morning with guests off Dimsey Point across Rivers Inlet not far from the Sportsman’s Club when they caught a 50 lbs Chinook/king salmon. We were fishing with a glow white hoochie & purple haze flasher at 53’ on the downrigger in 90’ of water. The current had a lot of bait fish holding on the shoreline, as were the large Chinook. We hooked a salmon every time we went past the bluff for a very productive morning. Fish ranging from 18-50lbs were hooked.
